GA4 and Conversion Tracking Setup
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google’s free analytics platform, and conversion tracking is how GA4 and your ad accounts learn which visits turned into a call, a form or a sale. Our GA4 and conversion tracking setup service builds that measurement correctly, tests it and documents it, so the numbers in your reports can be trusted. At OnlyaClick it is part of our digital marketing services.
You get one agreed definition of a lead, tracked the same way in Analytics and in every ad platform you pay for.

What Conversion Tracking Is
Most websites have an analytics tag. Far fewer can answer a simple question: how many leads came from Google Ads last month, and how many from organic search? Answering it takes an event for each action that matters, a way to mark the important ones, and a working connection between Analytics and the ad accounts that spend your money.
In GA4 those important actions are called key events. Google’s documentation explains that you create or identify an event for the interaction and then mark it as a key event, and that marking counts from that day forward without changing past data. That is one good reason to set tracking up before a campaign starts, not after it.
Who It Is For
Businesses that run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or social ads and want those platforms optimizing toward real leads instead of page views. Service businesses where most leads arrive by phone or web form. Online stores that need purchase and revenue figures they can match to their order system. And any business whose reports still depend on an old Universal Analytics setup: Google says standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data on July 1, 2023, so those reports have not changed since.
It is also a good fit after a website rebuild, when tags are often lost, or when two people have added tracking codes over the years and some leads are now counted twice.
What the Engagement Includes
A measurement plan
A written list of the actions that matter to your business, such as form submissions, calls from the website, booked appointments and purchases, with the single name each one will carry in every tool.
GA4 property and tag setup
A correctly configured GA4 property and data stream, installed through Google Tag Manager or your platform’s built-in integration, with visits from your own team filtered out of the reports.
Events and key events
An event for each action in the plan, checked in GA4’s debug view, with the ones that represent a lead or a sale marked as key events.
Ad platform connections
GA4 linked to Google Ads, with conversions created from your key events so campaigns can bid toward them, plus conversion tags for the other platforms you advertise on, so every account counts the same lead the same way.
Consent and privacy settings
Tags set up to respect the choices visitors make in your cookie banner, and data retention settings reviewed against your privacy policy. We do not give legal advice. We make the tracking match the policy you and your advisers have approved.
Reporting and documentation
A simple report showing leads by channel, and a document listing every tag, trigger and event, so whoever maintains the site next can understand what is there and why.
How It Works, Step by Step
1. Consultation. We learn how customers contact you, what a qualified lead looks like to your team, and which ad accounts and tools you use today.
2. Audit. We check what is installed now: duplicate tags, missing events, broken links between accounts, and figures that do not match your own records.
3. Plan. You review and approve the measurement plan before anything changes.
4. Build and test. We configure the property, tags and events, then submit real test forms, calls and purchases to confirm each one is recorded once, in the right place.
5. Launch and reconcile. We publish the changes, then compare tracked leads with your inbox, phone log or CRM over the first weeks and correct anything that does not line up.
How to Measure the Results
Match to your records: leads tracked in GA4 and your ad accounts compared with the leads your team actually received. The aim is a close match, with any gap explained.
No double counting: each form submission, call or purchase recorded once, in Analytics and in each ad account.
Cost per lead by channel: what each traffic source costs per real lead, a figure that only becomes reliable once the tracking behind it is.
Decisions made: budget moved toward the channels that produce leads and away from the ones that do not.
Tracking is not a result in itself. It is worth paying for when it changes what you spend and where, and that is the test we hold the work to.
How It Connects to Our Other Services
GA4 and conversion tracking setup is part of our digital marketing services, and it is the foundation for paid campaigns: our Google Ads search management and Performance Max work bids toward the conversions this setup defines. Phone calls are the leads analytics most often misses, so it pairs naturally with phone call tracking. The same data also shows which pages bring in organic leads, which is where a technical SEO audit starts.
GA4 and Conversion Tracking Questions
We already have Google Analytics installed. Why would we need this?
An installed tag records visits. It does not, on its own, tell you which visits became leads. The common gaps are missing key events, Analytics not linked to the ad accounts, and actions counted twice. An audit shows which of these apply to your site before any work is quoted.
Are GA4 key events and Google Ads conversions the same thing?
They are related but separate. Key events are the important actions you mark in Analytics. Google Ads conversions can be created from those key events, and they are what Google Ads uses for bidding. Google notes that Google Ads conversions are reviewed in Google Ads or in the Advertising section of Analytics, not in the standard reports, which explains many cases where the two sets of numbers differ.
Can you fix the data we have already collected?
Usually not. GA4 counts a key event from the day it is marked, and past reports are not rewritten. We test everything before launch so the data is accurate from that day on, and for the earlier period we compare against your own records instead.
