Performance Max Campaign Management to Grow Your Business
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that runs from a single campaign across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You tell Google which conversions matter, supply the creative, and Google’s automation decides where and when the ads show. Managing it is part of our PPC services.
The automation is only as good as what it is given. Our job is to give it accurate conversion data, good assets and firm limits, then check its work every week.

What Performance Max Is
Google describes Performance Max as a goal based campaign. Instead of choosing keywords and placements one channel at a time, you build asset groups: sets of headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos organized around a product, service or audience. Google’s Smart Bidding then bids in each auction based on how likely it is to produce a conversion, and assembles ads from your assets for whichever channel the person is on.
You still have levers. Audience signals tell Google who your customers are so it learns faster. Search themes point it toward the searches you care about. Negative keywords, brand exclusions and the final URL expansion setting keep it away from searches and pages you do not want.
Who Performance Max Is For
It suits businesses that already track conversions reliably and want reach beyond the search results page: online stores with a product feed, lead generation businesses with a steady flow of form fills or calls, and local businesses that want store visits. It is a weaker fit for a brand new account with no conversion history, or a business whose only goal is a handful of exact searches. In those cases a Google Ads search campaign usually comes first, and Performance Max is added once the data exists.
What the Management Includes
Conversion goals and values
We decide with you which actions count, such as purchases, booked calls or qualified forms, and remove the ones that do not. Counting page views or minor clicks as conversions teaches the bidding to chase the wrong people.
Asset groups and creative
We split asset groups by product line or service so each one has its own message, and write headlines and descriptions that read correctly in any combination. Images and video come from your library or from our video and photo content team, so Google is not left to generate weak filler.
Signals and search themes
We add audience signals from your customer lists and site visitors, and search themes that describe what your buyers look for.
Guardrails
We set negative keywords for Search and Shopping, excluded content keywords for Display and Video, brand exclusions where your own brand searches belong in another campaign, and a deliberate choice on final URL expansion so Google only sends people to pages you approve.
Working alongside Search
Google gives exact match keywords in a Search campaign priority over Performance Max for the same search. We use that to keep your most important searches under precise control while Performance Max covers the rest.
How It Works, Step by Step
1. Readiness check. We review your conversion tracking, any existing campaigns, your product feed if you sell online, and the creative you already have.
2. Build. Goals, asset groups, signals, search themes, exclusions and budget are set up and walked through with you before anything goes live.
3. Learning period. The bidding needs time and conversions to settle, so we avoid large changes early and watch spend and lead quality closely.
4. Weekly review. We read the Performance Max search terms report, the channel and asset reports, and add exclusions or replace assets where the data points to it.
5. Monthly report. Spend, conversions, cost per conversion or return on ad spend, and where the money went by channel, in plain language with our recommendation.
How to Measure the Results
Cost per conversion or return on ad spend: the main test. Lead businesses judge cost per qualified lead; stores judge revenue against spend.
Lead quality: whether the calls and forms turn into customers. Automated bidding can find cheap leads that never buy, so we compare against what your team closes.
Overall account results: whether total conversions grew, not just whether Performance Max claimed credit for sales your search or brand campaigns would have won anyway.
Google controls the auctions and placements, so we do not promise a cost per lead or a return figure. We promise clear reporting and steady management.
How It Connects to Our Other Services
Performance Max sits inside our PPC services and usually runs next to a Google Ads search campaign. Online stores pair it with our ecommerce PPC work on product feeds and Shopping ads. Google is also moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay per lead goals, so home service clients may meet it there first. Phone call tracking supplies the conversion data the bidding depends on.
Performance Max Questions
Can I see which searches my Performance Max ads showed for?
Yes. Google Ads has a search terms report for Performance Max that shows the searches behind your ads, along with landing page and headline insights. We review it every week and add negative keywords for searches you cannot serve.
Will Performance Max replace my search campaigns?
Usually not. Google gives exact match keywords in a Search campaign priority over Performance Max, so we keep your most valuable searches in Search for tighter control and let Performance Max reach people on YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps.
What do I need before starting Performance Max?
Working conversion tracking matters most, because the bidding optimizes toward whatever you count as a conversion. You also need images, a logo, text and ideally video, plus a product feed if you sell online. We check all of this in the readiness review before any budget is spent.
